The Right Place to Buy Rubber Granules for Synthetic Fields

Our Granules Aren’t Just Green—They’re Built to Last!

Choosing the right rubber granules for a synthetic five-a-side football field is crucial due to the high number of weekly playing hours. On average, two one-hour matches are played daily, with frequent action changes and limited space—leading to greater wear compared to full-size football pitches.

You probably didn’t expect that statement—but maybe you’ve never considered it! Now you’ve found the right place not only to buy granules, but also to learn how to install infill correctly.

We Use the Right Amount of Granules on Synthetic Turf!

How do you decide how many granules to add to your old synthetic five-a-side pitch? It’s no small question! You need to measure, in millimeters, how much of the synthetic grass blade protrudes above the current infill.

Let’s take an example: if the blade is exposed by 20 mm on average, a refill is definitely needed.

How much granule should be added? This simple formula will help you calculate the correct amount:

(“Free blade height” – 10 mm) × 4 kg infill granules per mÂē × total mÂē of the field = Quantity in kg to purchase

Important: You must not overfill the field with granules, as this can cause slipping and potential injuries to your loyal players. At least 10 mm of blade height must remain exposed to ensure structural integrity across the surface. (Note: the synthetic grass blade acts as a containment structure for the granules on the turf.)

Easy, right?

CLARITY ON MICROPLASTICS | RUBBER INFILL FOR SYNTHETIC TURF

CLARITY ON MICROPLASTICS | RUBBER INFILL FOR SYNTHETIC TURF

As industry professionals, it is essential that we provide clarity regarding the use of rubber infill for synthetic turf football fields.

Introduction
Recently, the European Union, following an investigative period, issued a directive—binding only for EU Member States—concerning the application of usage rules and bans related to what is defined as microplastics.

Below, we present the key excerpts from this new Regulation that specifically concern rubber infill for synthetic turf.

REGULATION (EU) 2023/2055 OF THE COMMISSION – 25 September 2023

This regulation amends Annex XVII of Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006 of the European Parliament and Council concerning the registration, evaluation, authorization, and restriction of chemical substances (REACH), with regard to synthetic polymer microparticles. Key considerations include:

  • (1) The widespread presence of tiny fragments of chemically modified natural or synthetic polymers, which are water-insoluble, degrade very slowly, and are easily ingested by living organisms, raises concerns about their overall environmental impact and potential risks to human health. These polymers are found throughout the environment, including in drinking water and food, and contribute to microplastic pollution.

  • (2) Much of the microplastic pollution is generated unintentionally—for example, through the fragmentation of larger plastic waste, tire wear, road paint erosion, or washing of synthetic garments. However, tiny polymer fragments are also intentionally manufactured for use as such or added to products.

  • (53) Regarding granular infill used on synthetic sports surfaces, the Commission considers that extending the transitional period to eight years before the market ban is justified. This allows existing synthetic sports surfaces using such infill to reach their natural end-of-life before needing replacement.

  • (j) Starting from 17 October 2031, the marketing of granular infill for use on synthetic sports surfaces will be prohibited.

A full PDF version of the regulation is available, with highlighted sections relevant to polymer use as infill for synthetic turf.

Conclusions – FAQ

1) What does the new Regulation establish? It bans, within EU Member States only, the sale/purchase and consequently the new use of polymeric infill for synthetic turf.

2) From when will the sale/purchase and new use of rubber infill be prohibited? Starting 17 October 2031, manufacturers and resellers must indicate in their offers that granular polymeric material with a particle size below 5 mm cannot be used for loose applications in manufactured goods or finished products intended for sale within the EU market.

3) If I purchase rubber infill before 17 October 2031, can I continue using it for my synthetic turf field until its end-of-life? Yes. You may continue using it until the field reaches its end-of-life—for example, a full-size football pitch may remain in use until 2043.

Playground Flooring | Minimum Recycled Content

Playground Flooring | Minimum Recycled Content

Environmental sustainability has become a priority in the design and construction of playground flooring. The use of recycled materials such as cast-in-place rubber granules not only helps reduce waste but also ensures the safety and durability of play surfaces.

Importance of Certification

Certifying the minimum recycled content of rubber playground flooring is essential to ensuring the materials used come from sustainable sources. This certification certifies that a significant percentage of the materials used have been recovered and reused, thus reducing the overall environmental impact.

At Prismi, we have achieved this important milestone of certifying the minimum recycled content, which provides our clients with a competitive advantage in tenders.

Regulations and Minimum Environmental Criteria (CAM)

In Italy, the Minimum Environmental Criteria (CAM) govern the procurement of design, supply, and installation services for street furniture and outdoor areas, including playgrounds. These criteria promote the use of recycled and sustainable materials, while ensuring the safety and quality of installations.

Shock-absorbing flooring poured in situ: requirements and criteria for choosing the right materials.

Experts in the field are well-versed in the materials and their construction methods; in this summary, we clarify the specific aspects of the application of shock-absorbing rubber flooring.

The CAM requirement states that rubber agglomerate surfaces must have a minimum recycled rubber content of 50% by weight of recycled product. Breaking down the numbers, we publish the following table for a detailed analysis of the components.

Comparazione pavimentazione parco giochi con granuli Prismi ed EPDM per contenuto minimo di riciclatoIt is clear that on a 3+1 cm rubber cast-in-place, using entirely recycled rubber granules achieves a 76% benefit, while using virgin EPDM products for the top layer only achieves less than 45%.

It follows that an anti-shock rubber surface made with our recycled products far exceeds the minimum requirement set by the CAM, while even partial use of virgin EPDM granules falls short.

Advantages of Recycled Rubber Flooring

  1. Waste Reduction: Using recycled rubber materials helps reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills.
  2. Sustainability: Promotes a circular economy, where materials can be continually reused.
  3. Safety: Poured-in-place recycled rubber flooring can be designed to be slip-resistant and shock-absorbent, reducing the risk of injury.

Conclusion

Adopting playground flooring certified for minimum recycled content represents an important step toward a more sustainable future. It ensures not only environmental protection, but also the safety and well-being of the children who use these spaces. Choose the rubber granules for your needs from our PLAY RUBBER category.

Rubber Underlay or Mat | Budget-Friendly Acoustic

How impact noise propagatesrumore da impatto propagazione in edilizia

Quality Footstep noise is a major problem on floors, especially in residential units, as footsteps from above are transmitted to the unit below.

There are various soundproofing methods (rubber underlay or mat for subfloors and wall rolls) that can significantly reduce impact noise. The selection of soundproofing materials depends on the type of flooring: slate, wood, tiles, carpet, etc. Soundproofing is an effective way to prevent sound from entering or leaving a room. It is quite popular nowadays, especially in homes where tenants share walls.

A budget-friendly yet high-quality job can achieve excellent acoustic results. Acoustic underlay can be installed during construction when planning a new home or commercial building, or as a retrofit solution.

How to Soundproof Floors

To successfully soundproof a floor, an acoustic underlay must be added to isolate and block both impact and airborne noise. Only a few products on the market can do both, and among them is rubber in rolls, which serves as an underlay and mat beneath the screed or on perimeter walls. Depending on the type of subfloor (e.g., wood or concrete) and the material of the finished floor (e.g., tiles, hardwood, floating wood, or carpet), the solution may vary in thickness. A good technician will certainly recommend the best choice to achieve excellent home acoustics.

Technical Notes on Noise in Homes

Floor soundproofing addresses two types of noise:

  1. Impact noise or footstep noise.
  2. Airborne noise.

Impact noise, also known as footstep noise, is produced by an object hitting the floor. Examples include footsteps, dragging furniture, and sounds like dropping a heavy object. Impact noise travels freely through the air and the ceiling below. Naturally, footstep noise affects the person living beneath the floor more than anyone else.

Airborne noise is transmitted through the air, spreading through the atmosphere. Airborne noise includes sounds such as people talking, dogs barking, cars moving or honking, music, and especially someone hosting a party below. Thus, soundproofing your floors helps mitigate these issues.

When soundproofing your floors, consider a few factors to help decide which method to use:

  • Seeking professional assistance! Hiring an installation expert.
  • Choosing a Made in Italy product with certified rubber underlay and real screed thickness.
  • Follow this link for rubber rolls for subfloors.

Building sound insulation: three excellent reasons to use recycled rubber

Building sound insulation: three excellent reasons to use recycled rubber

Many times, you involuntarily hear countless conversations through walls. If so, you may be living in a house with insufficient soundproofing on both the walls and the floor.

With cities becoming denser and builders looking to increase their profit margins, it is not uncommon for acoustic comfort to be overlooked in many building projects.

When the sound is excessive or unwanted, the correct term is noise and it has an impact on the human body. While not all places need to seal off all types of sound, creating spaces with an adequate degree of soundproofing improves the quality of life.

Characteristics of a sound absorbing material for sound insulation.

The materials considered “good sound absorbers” are light, low mass, soft and porous such as rolls of recycled rubber.

If the aim is to make the environment more pleasant, with less echo, what we are looking for is to absorb the sound. Recycled rubber lends itself to this function as a use in its compacted granular form with open cells in the production of a roll.

Ideas from the Acoustic Insulation Regulations in Building.

The Italian acoustic legislation for residential buildings establishes that for the purposes of the construction or renovation of a building, the acoustic requirements must be respected. The construction company that does not comply with the requirements will be obliged to compensate the damage to those who suffer from noise pollution.

The law for the acoustic insulation of apartments provides that the end of the work must be supplemented by an acoustic certification, a document which certifies that the property complies with the passive acoustic requirements provided for by the legislation.

The reasons for choosing recycled rubber rolls are many and here we summarize the three most important:

1) The recycled rubber rolls offer the characteristics of a resilient impact resistant material. Therefore, a resilient underfloor mat is shock-absorbing by improving the acoustics in the environment with attenuation values even higher than 20 Db.

2) It is an Eco-friendly product made up of over 90% recycled product. The use of recycled rubber contributes to a CO2 reduction of approximately 1.7 tons of CO2 for each ton of product. An excellent result that cannot be compared with any other sound-absorbing material sold on the market.

3) It is 100% recyclable: It is not composed of a layered fusion of different materials for its manufacture! In the great propaganda of the circular economy we can say that the roll of recycled rubber is the product that is best suited for this definition.
