Poured-in-Place Rubber Playground Surfacing | Colored SBR & EPDM Granules | Play Rubber
Play Rubber is Prismi’s specialist range of colored SBR and EPDM rubber granules for poured-in-place playground surfacing, produced in Italy since 1993. The system comprises two layers: Play Rubber Base (underfloor substrate) for impact absorption and critical fall height compliance, and Play Rubber Top (colored surface layer) for the decorative, wear-resistant finish.
Granules are produced from eco-sustainable secondary raw materials with high CO2 savings versus virgin EPDM, and meet EN 1177 fall-height safety standards.
Technical data sheets with HIC (Head Injury Criterion) values for each thickness are available for download.
Play Rubber Base | SBR and EPDM underfloor granules for impact absorption
Play Rubber Base comes in two grades: Underfloor Hybrid Mix UV and Underfloor Open Mix UV.
Both are produced from pre-consumer industrial rubber, not post-consumer tyres, which means fewer impurities, reduced polyurethane binder consumption and better HIC performance at lower substrate thicknesses.
This translates directly into lower material and installation costs per square meter.
Both grades are tested for EN 1177 critical fall height compliance.

Frequently Asked Questions | Rubber granules for playground safety
What is the difference between Play Rubber Base and Play Rubber Top?
Play Rubber Base is the underfloor substrate layer: it absorbs impact energy and determines the certified critical fall height according to EN 1177. Play Rubber Top is the surface finishing layer: made of colored EPDM or SBR granules, it provides the decorative function, abrasion resistance and long-term color durability. Both layers are applied in sequence using polyurethane binder and together form the complete poured-in-place safety surface.
Are Play Rubber granules EN 1177 compliant for playground surfacing?
Yes. The entire Play Rubber range — both the Top series (surface layer) and the Underfloor series (substrate) — is tested for impact attenuation compliance with EN 1177, which governs shock-absorbing surfaces in playgrounds and play areas. Technical data sheets include HIC (Head Injury Criterion) values for each granule type and installed thickness.
How much rubber granule is needed per m² for a 10 mm poured-in-place surface?
Play Rubber Top EPDM in-mass granules require approximately 6 kg/m² per 10 mm of surface layer thickness. Compared to virgin EPDM first-grade granules, which require approximately 10 kg/m² for the same thickness, the material saving is significant — around 40% by weight. For the Underfloor substrate, consumption varies depending on the chosen type (Closed, Hybrid or Open) and the thickness needed to achieve the required HIC value.
What is the difference between in-mass EPDM granules and coated SBR granules?
In-mass granules (typically EPDM) have color distributed uniformly throughout the entire volume of the granule: even as the surface wears, the color remains consistent over time, resulting in superior chromatic stability. Coated granules (typically SBR) have color applied as an external coating: they are more economical but generally show lower light stability compared to in-mass products. The choice depends on the application, UV exposure and the expected service life of the installation.
Can Play Rubber poured-in-place surfacing be installed over existing surfaces such as asphalt or concrete?
Yes. The Play Rubber system can be applied over existing flat surfaces, including asphalt and concrete, provided the base is clean, stable and free of structural defects. The Underfloor substrate layer is applied before the Top finishing layer. For installations on natural ground or non-rigid surfaces, it is advisable to assess the substrate preparation with Prismi’s technical support team, who provide full assistance to professional installers.
