Rubber Granules for Poured-in-Place Athletic Running Tracks | Eco-Sustainable SBR Alternative to Virgin EPDM | Athletic Track
Athletic Track is Prismi’s specialist range of rubber granules for poured-in-place athletic running tracks, manufactured in Italy since 1990. The system consists of two layers applied with polyurethane binder: Underfloor Closed (black NR/SBR granule, base substrate) and the Runner series (colored NR/SBR granules, surface finishing layer). Runner granules, available in red, blue and green, are an eco-sustainable alternative to virgin EPDM: produced from secondary rubber raw materials, they significantly reduce CO₂ impact without compromising athletic performance.
Particle size for both Runner and Underfloor: 1–4 mm. Standard quantity: 6.0 kg per m² per 10 mm of depth (±10%). Periodic particle size analysis per EN 933-1. Runner hardness: 60–63 Shore A; Underfloor hardness: 50–55 Shore A.

Athletic Track system | two-layer poured-in-place running track construction
A poured-in-place athletic track requires two distinct layers, both applied with two-component polyurethane binder.
Base layer Underfloor Closed: black in-mass NR/SBR granule with a hardness of 50–55 Shore A. Softer and more impact-absorbing, it forms the elastic substrate that delivers running comfort and reduces joint stress on the athlete’s knees and ankles. Quantity: 6.0 kg/m² per 10 mm of depth.
Surface layer Runner Red, Blue or Green: colored coated NR/SBR granule with a hardness of 60–63 Shore A. Denser and more wear-resistant, it forms the visible surface of the track, with light stability up to 95% and abrasion resistance up to 97%. Quantity: 6.0 kg/m² per 10 mm of depth.
Both granules are produced from secondary rubber raw materials and represent an eco-sustainable solution compared to virgin EPDM, with equivalent technical performance and a lower production cost.

Frequently asked questions about Athletic Track rubber granules
What is the difference between Runner granules and virgin EPDM for athletic tracks?
Prismi Runner granules (Red, Blue, Green) are produced from secondary NR/SBR rubber raw materials — industrial production waste coated with light-stable pigments — and represent an eco-sustainable alternative to first-grade virgin EPDM. Technical performance is equivalent: 1–4 mm particle size, 60–63 Shore A hardness, light stability up to 95%, abrasion resistance up to 97%. The key advantage is a significant reduction in CO₂ footprint compared to virgin EPDM production, at equivalent finished track quality. This makes Athletic Track granules suitable for projects with sustainability certification requirements (LEED, BREEAM, GPP).
What is the role of Underfloor Closed in the Athletic Track system?
Underfloor Closed is the black in-mass NR/SBR granule that forms the elastic substrate of the running track. With a lower hardness (50–55 Shore A) than the Runner finishing layer (60–63 Shore A), it absorbs the impact energy from the athlete’s footstrike, reducing joint loading on knees and ankles. It is laid first with polyurethane binder, then covered by the chosen Runner color as the visible surface. Produced predominantly from recycled truck tyres with 1–4 mm particle size and a standard quantity of 6.0 kg/m² per 10 mm of depth.
How much rubber granule is needed to build a poured-in-place athletic track?
The standard quantity for both Athletic Track products — Underfloor Closed and Runner — is 6.0 kg per m² per 10 mm of depth (±10%). Total track thickness is defined during the design phase according to the project specifications (e.g., World Athletics certification requirements for accredited facilities). Typical specifications call for 10–13 mm for the base layer and 5–10 mm for the finishing layer. Contact us with your track dimensions and layout to receive an exact quantity calculation per zone.
Are Prismi Athletic Track granules compliant with World Athletics technical requirements?
Runner and Underfloor Closed granules are produced with particle size analysed periodically per EN 933-1 and from secondary raw materials with impurities below 0.001–0.01% by weight. Compliance with World Athletics (formerly IAAF) technical requirements for certified tracks depends on the complete installation system — granules, polyurethane binder, layer thicknesses and sub-base preparation — which is defined by the installer during the design phase. Prismi provides complete technical data sheets with all physical parameters required for project technical documentation.
Can two-color or multi-color tracks be built with Athletic Track granules?
Yes. The Runner range covers three colors, red, blue and green, which can be combined on the same track to create two-tone or color-zoned surfaces: for example, red for the running lanes and blue or green for jump or throw areas. Color differentiation also serves a functional role in visually demarcating the different zones of the facility. Each zone is treated separately with the relevant Runner granule and polyurethane binder. Contact our technical office for a zone-by-zone layout plan and quantity calculation.
