Rubber Granules for Synthetic Bowls Greens | Resin Base + Surface Spread | Bowls Court

Spread rubber for Bowls Court color grey white sand
Range production rubber sand to spreading on bowls greens club

Bowls Court is Prismi’s specialist range of rubber granules for the construction and maintenance of synthetic resin bowls greens, manufactured in Italy since 1990. The system consists of two distinct products with complementary functions.

Rubber Sand (particle size 0.5–1.5 mm): SBR 1502 vulcanized rubber granules, in-mass colored in white, grey or amber. Mixed with acrylic resins to form the compact, durable base mat of the bowls green.

Spread (particle size 0.3–0.6 mm): ultra-fine SBR 1502 granules, in-mass colored in the same three colors. Applied as a loose surface dressing on the resin mat and re-dressed during play, exactly like natural sand on traditional greens.

The main advantage of Spread over silica sand is that it does not abrade the surface of bowls during play, preserving the finish and treatment of the bowls over time and reducing maintenance costs.

Both products are SBR 1502 rubber, 58–62 Shore A hardness, absolute density 1.13 g/cm³, particle size analysis per EN 933-1.

Spread surface dressing is available to buy online in 25 kg bags and Big Bag. Rubber Sand base is available on direct quote from the manufacturer.

How the Bowls Court system works | resin base and surface dressing explained

A synthetic resin bowls green is built in two phases, each corresponding to a product in the Bowls Court range.

Phase 1 : Base with Rubber Sand: the 0.5–1.5 mm SBR granule is blended with acrylic resin and cast in place to form the solid, weatherproof base mat of the green. The resin bonds the granules into a firm, flat surface. The color, white, grey or amber , sets the final appearance of the green.

Phase 2 : Surface dressing with Spread: once the resin mat has cured, the ultra-fine Spread granule (0.3–0.6 mm) is distributed evenly across the surface. The Spread is loose and unfixed, and behaves during play exactly like natural sand on traditional greens: players re-dress it between frames using a brush or cloth. Unlike silica sand, the SBR rubber granule does not abrade the surface of bowls during contact.

Maintenance: the Spread is the consumable component that depletes gradually with play and must be replenished periodically. It is available for direct online purchase from Prismi.

Frequently asked questions about Bowls Court rubber granules

The Bowls Court range consists of two distinct product families with different functions. Rubber Sand (0.5–1.5 mm particle size) is the base product: it is blended with acrylic resin and cast in place to form the permanent, compact base mat of the green. Spread (0.3–0.6 mm) is the ultra-fine surface dressing: it is applied loose over the cured resin mat and re-dressed during play using a brush, exactly as players manage natural sand on traditional greens. Both come in white, grey and amber, matched to ensure visual consistency between the base mat and the surface dressing color.

The main advantage of Spread SBR over silica sand is bowls protection: vulcanized SBR rubber does not abrade the surface finish of bowls during rolling and impact. Silica sand, by contrast, is made of angular particles that progressively wear the coating, paint or anodizing of bowls, reducing their playing performance and lifespan. Additionally, SBR rubber does not compact when wet, does not produce airborne dust during play and is not easily displaced by wind or rain, unlike sand which can be washed off the green after heavy rainfall.

Spread behaves like natural sand: it should be re-dressed with a brush or cloth before and during play to maintain an even surface. Over time, small amounts are lost through wear, wind or cleaning routines and must be replenished. Replenishment frequency depends on the intensity of use of the green and local weather conditions. For bowling clubs with daily activity, it is advisable to keep a stock of Spread on site. Spread Amber, Grey and White is available to buy online directly from Prismi in 25 kg bags for regular replenishment.

As a technical reference from the data sheet, Spread consumption is 4.5 kg per m² per 10 mm of applied depth (±10%). In practice, the Spread is applied as a thin loose layer (typically 2–5 mm) over the resin mat, so consumption at first installation is well below this figure. Replenishment quantities are even lower, representing only the fraction lost with use. Contact us with the dimensions of your green for an accurate first-installation and replenishment calculation.

No. Both Rubber Sand and Spread are produced from pre-consumer secondary SBR 1502 rubber raw materials sourced from industrial production waste, not from recycled post-consumer tyres (ELT). This guarantees high purity: impurities below 0.001% by weight, no steel wire inclusions and consistent granulometric uniformity. The rubber is in-mass colored: color is distributed throughout the entire granule cross-section, not applied as a surface coating, ensuring superior chromatic stability over time. Manufactured in Monteprandone (Ascoli Piceno, Italy) since 1990.
